Savory Cake

Look at my 'Turkey Sausage & Onion cake'. Normally when you hear of cake you think a sweet cake with yummy flavors such as orange, pineapple, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and so much more. But this time I changed it up and tried doing something different. I took the recipe to a regular sweet cake and tweaked it to make it a savory cake.

My Turkey Sausage and Onion cake came out just fine and tastes great with whatever you choose to serve it with. Cream cheese, butter, just by it self with a sauce or dressing. It can be used as a side dish. It looks a bit similar to a bread but is much softer and tastes a bit different. In my opinion it is also a little easier to make than bread. (But if you are looking for a bread recipe check out my blog post for Homemade Bread But this is not bread. It's cake. You can also be just as creative with it as you would any regular cake. Use different flavors such as shredded chicken, beef, shrimp. Be versatile with your herbs and spices and add in whatever you want. Vegetables, meat, herbs, anything.

Here is how its made:

Ingredients

1 Cup Butter
1 pinch salt ( Literally)
1 pinch of pepper
4 eggs
3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1 cup milk or Stock (Beef stock, Chicken Stock etc)
Meats of your choice (any meats added must be first fully cooked separately
veggies and herbs of your choice

How to Make:

Firstly preheat your oven to 350F or 170C and then get the cake pan you will be using to bake your cake. Butter and flour it in order to not have the cake stick to the bottom of the pan.

Then in a big bowl put in your butter, salt  and pepper (Be very, very careful not to overseason. If your meat that you are adding is already seasoned. Then it is better not to add in any salt or pepper at all in order to not over season your cake) and mix well with and electronic mixer ( if you don't have an electronic mixer than use a wooden spoon and mix by hand) add in your eggs and mix again, until smooth. Put in your flour a little at a time and mix well, add in your baking powder and mix well. Now add in your 1 cup of milk or stock (Stock is a liquid that is made with the flavors of either beef, chicken, shrimp or anything else. It can be found in the store in the form of a cube on the seasoning isle to be mixed in with water to form a stock. Or it can be bought as a stock already. Normally sold in a box or a can  like 'chicken stock.') Mix it all well.

Separately choose what ingredients you would like to add to your cake to make it your desired flavor. add it in at this time. Chop up your ingredients. Whatever it is and add it into the cake batter and mix it all in with a wooden spoon.

Pour your mix into your already greased cake pan and put it in the oven for 45 minutes.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool a little before serving. Your done.

Make it as a whole cake as cupcakes, do what you want with it. But be creative...

  1. Wow, this was extremely creative. What does it taste like? I like the idea but am sceptical about it.

  2. I actually loved. It tastes like soft tasty bread. Stuffed or filled with all these delicious things. I thinks next one will be shrimp or chicken. Kind of like an empadao or bread. But is a bit different. You have to try it to understand.
